Love the focus on nutrition and yes, when you eat other than a typical Western diet, you are looked at as quirky or odd. Please, more like this episode. And J, digging the color!!!😀
This is a GREAT question Mary! It might be best addressed in an episode. So we will make a note to answer this next time we record! The short answer is we don’t know how much glucose the brain needs. Remember that the body has the ability to produce its own glucose for cells that must have glucose. Mostly ones without mitochondria like RBCs. More and more we are learning just how happy the brain is on ketones suggesting we have always used them throughout human history! I love this topic so we can definitely make a segment out of answering cool questions like this!
The brain needs more fat than glucose. A little anecdote: when I was prepping for a bodybuilding show, my coach atm removed all fats because I wasn't dropping weight, however I still had a couple blueberries here and there (LOL). I swear to you, I have never felt so dumb & slow in my life. At the time I was still in the military working as a financial clerk and the simplest of tasks would leave me blankly staring at my computer screen not knowing what to do lol. I eventually got it ahah but I was very slow. Mentally un-sharp.
That's a great anecdote! I love fat and have just started smearing tallow (home-rendered) all over my face, bc I've been hearing about it lately. My dog loves it when I do that.

I own color! See!
J and Daryl, does the brain actually need glucose? Can a person eat only meat and still have an ok brain or is glucose necessary?

I'm just reading about the brain utilizing ketones when glucose is low.. From Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine, that you recommended..
And newer research suggests the brain will use ketones if they are present even when glucose is also present! That’s very new and emerging!
