I’m going to pass this along to my Dr. (in the VA medical system). She wanted to subscribe me statins. I politely declined and because all my other lab markers were very good, she agreed.
And that is the real key! Cholesterol numbers should never be acted upon in isolation. In my opinion that is cookie cutter medicine destined to fail! Context always matters I. The biological system that is the human body!
Thanks J!! I like to take control of my own health and am guided by you and a few others that back up their research. The more I learn the more confident I am in all aspects of life.
It’s makes me so happy to read comments like this. People are far more capable than they give themselves credit for! Good for you to keep asking questions!
Absolutely but in a word…YES! CoQ10 is one of the molecule depleted in that pathway blocked by statins. In fact it’s so important that OG statins used to include it but…cost won out of course!
Charlie was told yesterday that he has to stay on a high dose statin for life, secondary prevention, even though he still lives his healthy lifestyle and got a clean bill of health. Long term use concerns me. Any insight on this is appreciated. Also appreciated is your guidance along the way.😀
It’s a common refrain from doctors because they don’t have any other tools in their tool belt. I still believe with all other markers at optimal levels any benefits of statin therapy can be achieved in other ways minus the side effects. Often I will just ask someone to ask their prescribing physician about CoQ10 to assess their thought process…if there is one!
I heard you a while ago on Frank talking about taking CoQ10 with a statin. Charlie started taking it at that time and it relieved his side effects (crawly tingling and leg cramps). When I mentioned to his primary and cardiologist that he was taking it, they both thought it was a great idea. Why they did not tell him from the start, not sure. So thanks for your knowledge and willingness to share. On the statin itself, 3 docs all said the research supports secondary prevention use however, all 3 understood why I was skeptical about pre-event preventive use. It is almost like they know it doesn’t make much of a difference but they prescribe it anyway. One of the 3 docs is the one that worked with me to get off medications so there is hope that someday, maybe Charlie can get off the statin. Thank you J.
To a large degree they recommend statins to avoid potential future lawsuits. That’s a real thing they would never admit. Some believe in them, but others are just afraid.

Would you consider doing more on secondary prevention? Do you think taking CoQ10 benefits those taking statins and why?

Interesting. I never thought of that.
